Microsoft Eliminates 4,800 Roles and Restructures Xbox and Commercial Divisions

Microsoft is cutting roughly 4,800 jobs, which makes up about 2.1% of its global workforce. The layoffs mostly impact the company’s Commercial and Xbox divisions. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman stated that changing customer needs and business models prompted the decision, though she noted that AI is not replacing the eliminated roles. Alongside the cuts, Microsoft is restructuring its engineering teams and transferring four of its gaming studios to new management. To mitigate job losses over the past year, the company moved more than 4,000 employees to new internal positions. More than 30% of eligible workers also accepted a recent voluntary retirement offer. Microsoft plans to provide financial support to affected staff and indicated that more changes will occur in other departments.
