Walmart has announced a partnership with OpenAI to enable customers and Sam’s Club members to shop directly within ChatGPT, using OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” capability. In this setup, users can interact with ChatGPT in natural language to plan meals, restock essentials, or browse new items — then complete purchases without leaving the chat interface.
Walmart also already operates its own AI shopping assistant, “Sparky,” and the company intends this collaboration to be part of a broader shift toward “agentic commerce,” where AI systems anticipate and respond to consumer needs rather than merely reacting.
The move is meant to redefine the e-commerce experience by replacing more traditional search-and-list interfaces with more personalized, contextual, multimedia interactions. Walmart argues that the AI integration will make shopping more intuitive and proactive, helping customers discover what they need even before they think to ask for it. To support that goal, Walmart is also expanding use of AI internally: for instance, to accelerate fashion item production schedules and to reduce customer support resolution times.
Financial markets appear to have responded favorably to the news: Walmart’s stock rose roughly 3 % following the announcement. Analysts see the integration of AI into shopping as a major strategic step—positioning Walmart among the early adopters of conversational commerce and giving it a potential edge in capturing new digital consumer behaviors.
