Microsoft and OpenAI are deepening their partnership as OpenAI transitions into a public benefit corporation. Microsoft now holds a 27% stake in the new OpenAI Group PBC, valued at about $135 billion, continuing its role as OpenAI’s “frontier model partner.”
The updated agreement keeps Microsoft’s Azure exclusivity for OpenAI APIs but allows OpenAI to collaborate with third parties and host non-API products elsewhere. It also introduces an independent AGI verification panel, extends Microsoft’s IP rights through 2032, and includes OpenAI’s commitment to spend $250 billion more on Azure services.
Both companies say the revised terms give them more flexibility and independence while maintaining close collaboration—positioning them to advance responsible AI innovation and build new products that serve global users and developers.
